For some reason a good clear glaze and clay combo is hard to find.
Even when you match the brands it can come out crazed and it makes me so mad!!
So though this page will probably be bare for a while I have some information from testing them.
- Industrial Minerals 1101 LX Clear + Laguna's #16 Porcelain WC617 = Best results! No crazing even with a 350+ degree ice drop test.
- Industrial Minerals 1101 LX Clear + Laguna's B-Mix 5 WC401 = Medium results. No crazing untill 350+ degree ice drop test, even after not super bad.
- Amaco's HF-9 Zinc-Free Clear + Laguna's B-Mix 5 WC401 = Medium results. No crazing untill 350+ degree ice drop test.
- Amaco's HF-9 Zinc-Free Clear + Laguna's Frost^6 (Porcelain) WC437 = Not great, if applied thinly it dosen't craze but if applied too thick or over a very large area, or if anything is added to the clay like mason stain, it is prone to crazing. Does not survive the 300 degree ice drop test.
- Amaco's HF-9 Zinc-Free Clear + Laguna's #65 WC609 = Bad, crazed out of the kiln.
- Laguna's MS-29 Bright Clear + Laguna's #65 WC609 = Bad, crazed out of the kiln.
So currently I use Industrial Minerals 1101 LX Clear + Laguna's B-Mix 5 WC401 for planters and yarn bowls as the clay has more structure as it fires(#16 has a tendancy to slump/warp) and dosen't need to withstand high tempatures. For dishware I use the Industrial Minerals 1101 LX Clear + Laguna's #16 Porcelain WC617 for it's resistance to crazing and finished strength.
